Internship

SFU’s Business, Computing and Hospitality Management programs require students to spend some period of internship, mostly abroad in countries like Australia, the U.K. or the United States. The internship is for 300 hours for Business and Computing students and 1400 hours for Hospitality Management students. Students who opt for overseas internship are usually directed to approved internship providers to ensure that acceptance by the host establishment and subsequent immigration and visa requirements are properly met.

Although many of the internships are with pay, the benefits of internship go beyond the paycheck.  Examples of these benefits are:

  • Provide the students with hands-on learning experience in a variety of areas in the student’s field
  • Help identify and test one’s interests and abilities
  • Provide the work experience that employers are looking for in job   applicants
  • Ability to demonstrate to potential employers one’s skills and abilities and in many instances, internships develop into full employment
  • Create networking opportunities with individuals who may be helpful in one’s job search or in establishing one’s business.

Enrolment during the period of internship is a requirement as the internship is a credit bearing unit. Students do not graduate until they have completed their work experience and submitted the internship reports. Enrolment with SFU for the internship program (one unit) provides students with general accident coverage under the University’s Insurance scheme, continuous access to the University’s resource center, and assistance in preparing their CV as well as referral to potential host establishments. Once the students have successfully completed their internships, submitted their Management Reports, and obtained passing grade on all the required subjects, their grades will be forwarded to ICHM and Edexcel for verification and issuance of their respective diplomas.

This very promising student from Don Bosco Tarlac did not realize that he will be doing his internship in a progressive company in the US. At a very young age he was faced with an overwhelming task from the  corporate world, but because of his hands-on training with SFU, he hurdled the challenges with ease and is now earning the respect of his supervisors.
