    Habitat for Humanity 5/4/2010
    by: Albert Tijam

Fifteen students of the Southville Foreign University School of Business and Computing, and School of Hospitality Management, volunteered to help construct houses for the Habitat for Humanity Homes of Hope in Rodriguez, Rizal on April 19, 2010.

The SFU volunteers were divided into two groups to maximize work efficiency. The first group cleansed and painted fifteen (15) 2”x3”x6 meters c-purlin metal bars. The second group carried about 30-40 pieces of hollow blocks from the storage area to the second floor of a house. After a period of time, the groups had to rotate their responsibilities.  Moreover, after the painting of metal bars and transporting of hollow blocks were finished, the volunteers panned mixed gravel to produce 20 sacks of fine gravel.

Homes of Hope started in 1989 which emanated from the vision of an American couple. The first batch of houses was completed on July 1995.   Todate, the twelve (12) homepartners continue to enjoy the fruits of their sweat equity, a home to call their own in a hassle-free and clean environment.

This activity was organized by SFU Rotaract Club.

How do the students rate this activity:

“The activity was really fun and exciting. It was an activity that was worth participating. Just the thought of being a part of something that can help make a difference, makes me feel a sense of fulfillment. Knowing that in that simple way and small sacrifice, we can contribute to not only pursue the vision of habitat but also realize the dreams of many less fortunate Filipinos to have a decent place to live.”

                                                                                                                    -Jessica Delos Reyes

“Helping the construction workers to build a house is a lot of fun and the experience was awesome. It was tiring, but it is fun helping the homeless families have their own houses and by that helping them in a simple way really makes me happy.”

                                                                                                                    -Aaron S. David
