The Moderation System
In today’s emerging concept of globalization and world-class kind of education, any school cannot but aim for academic excellence.
At Southville Foreign University, one of the means to attain the goal of quality education is to have a way of assessing the performance of students. In terms of student achievement, one can see how far the student has maximized their campus learning, how well they have developed in the school, and how good they are as a training professional.
SFU maintains the standard of the foreign affiliate college and this is done through the moderation system.
ICHM
Associate Diploma in Hotel Management
The Advanced Diploma is based on key competencies and assessments. Assessments may be in the form of examinations, assignments, presentations, projects or practical demonstrations/skill audit.
The lecturers (assessors) write assessments based on the learning outcomes and key competencies outlined in the subject description. The assessments are forwarded to the Internal Verifier who comments on the content and may request for revisions, editing or enrichment of the same.
Once assessments are approved by the Internal Verifier, the lecturer (assessor) will provide the guidelines and grading opportunities to the students via the subject manual. Guidelines include submission dates. Draft submissions may be requested in respect of research papers and reports.
Students are required to submit the final assessment on or before the final submission date. Work should be submitted as a hard copy. Grading descriptors are forfeited in respect of late submission (1 grading descriptor per day up to 3 days late and thereafter all grading descriptors are forfeited).
Lecturers (assessors) will review the final submission and should it meet the specified outcomes and key competencies stipulated in the assessment, then the same will be forwarded to the Internal Verifier for further checking.
If the Internal Verifier is satisfied that the marking of the lecturer (assessor) is justified, then the work will be referred to ICHM for external audit. Work is only submitted for external audit upon completion of all outcomes and competencies for a specific subject.
The grade awarded by the external audit is final and only when SFU receives the moderated grade can the final grades be released to the students.
BTEC HND Units
The BTEC HND evaluation is based on assessment of evidence of students learning through assignments.
The local lecturers (assessors) write assignments based on the learning outcomes and criteria's of the unit description and outline. The assignments are forwarded to the Internal Verifier who comments on the content and may request for revisions, editing or enrichment of the same.
Once assignments are approved by the Internal Verifier, the Assessors will provide the students with copies of the assignments during the delivery of the unit. The assignment will state a draft submission date and final submission date.
On or before the draft submission date the student is required to provide the local lecturer with a hard copy of the draft, the local lecturer (assessor) will review the same and revert to the student with any comments for improvement via a feed back form and if required specify a date for re-submission of the draft.
Should a student fail to submit the draft as scheduled, they will forfeit the opportunity to have their local lecturer (assessor) review the draft and will have to submit the final work on or before the final submission date.
Students are required to submit the final assignment on or before the final submission date. Work should be submitted as a hard copy together with a soft copy uploaded to the network folder.
Local lecturers (assessors) will review the final submission and should it meet the specified outcomes and criteria's stipulated in the assignment, then the same will be forwarded to the Internal Verifier for further checking.
If the Internal Verifier is satisfied that the marking of the local lecturer (assessor) is justified, then the work will be referred to Edexcel and the External Verifier. Work is only submitted to the External Verifier upon completion of all outcomes and criteria's for a specific unit.
The grade awarded by the External Verifier is final and only when IHMCS receives the moderated grade can the final grades be released to the students.
