COLLEGE PREPARATION
The College Preparatory Program is offered to all incoming freshman students, in preparation for their academic subjects. Topics covered include Research Skills, Time Management, MS Office, and Technical Writing. The 2-week program commences on May 17, 2010, at 8.00am. All incoming Freshman students are required to attend.
Academic Support Programs
Special English Classes (RSWL) - A high school graduate is presumed to have acquired the ability in reading, writing, listening, and speaking English at level 10.0 which corresponds to ten years of schooling. Should a student fail to attain at least 10.0 in the English Diagnostic Examination, the student is required to attend the Special English classes. Students will be retested after they have completed the assigned number of hours of Special English to see if they have attained the required grade. If so, they will be permitted to enroll in their main academic program. Students may request to enter this program voluntarily at any point if they feel their English Language is insufficient for the demands of their course.
Math Enrichment Classes - A high school graduate is presumed to have acquired the ability in Mathematics at level 10.0 which corresponds to ten years of schooling. Failure to meet the grade requirement of at least 10.0 in the Math Diagnostic Exam would require attendance in the Math Enrichment classes. Students will be retested after they have completed the assigned number of hours of Math Enrichment to see if they have attained the required grade. If so, they will be permitted to enroll in their main academic program. Students may request to enter this program voluntarily at any point if they feel their Mathematics Proficiency Level is insufficient for the demands of their course.
Foundation Program
Except for college transfer student who are subject to Recognition of Prior Learning assessment and certificate culinary arts students, all students commence their academic program at SFU with Foundation subjects. Successful completion of these subjects is a pre-requisite for entering the EdExcel Higher National Diploma program and the ICHM Advanced Diploma program. The academic programs are taught at British/Australian University standard and Southville Foreign University has been designated as an “A” grade center for all EdExcel Higher National Diplomas offered by the university. As such the College Preparatory Program and Academic Foundation subjects are a requirement for all incoming freshman and are usually completed during or before the first semester of study.
EDEXCEL HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA
Students entering Southville Foreign University’s School of Hospitality Management are enrolled into in the EdExcel BTEC Higher National Diploma in Hospitality and may select from the specialists tracks that SFU is authorized to offer. These tracks* are:
Hospitality Management
Leisure and Tourism
Culinary Arts
The HND program requires successful completion of seven (7) core units, nine (9) specialist units inclusive of a 1,400 hour internship for graduation. Each unit is typically 60 hours of study and is equivalent to 5 credits. In addition there are seven (7) common skills to be achieved and each of these is equivalent to 1 credit.
All grading of the HND modules is done through a system of faculty grading, Internal Verification and External Verification. This ensures academic standards meet UK university criteria. Student may achieve Pass, Merit or Distinction grades in each module. Where work is incomplete or inadequate students are given the grade of Refer until such time as they satisfactorily complete the requirements. Southville will issue Statements of Grades upon request, but the official EdExcel Transcript and Diploma are issued once all requirements have been fulfilled.
The EdExcel Higher National Diploma serves as an entry qualification into the final year of university degrees. Southville Foreign University has agreements with several British Universities, Australian Universities and New Zealand Universities for final year entry. In addition, US universities will typically award 87 credits for transfer and students will enter as seniors while Philippine schools in particular, all year courses may be credited.
EDEXCEL CERTIFICATE IN CULINARY ARTS
Southville Foreign University offers two Edexcel BTEC Level III Certificate programs. These are designed as short courses and are a pre-requisite for students wishing to enter the Edexcel BTEC Higher National Diploma in Hospitality Management (Culinary Arts) program.
Edexcel BTEC Level III in International Cuisine
This program requires the successful completion of two (2) core units of 30 hours of study each and two (2) specialist units of 60 hours of study each.
Edexcel BTEC Level III in Food and Beverage Service
This program requires the successful completion of two (2) core units and two (2) specialist units. Each unit consists of a minimum of 30 hours of study each.
All grading of the Level III Certificate modules is done through a system of faculty grading, Internal Verification and External Verification. This ensures academic standards meet UK university criteria. Student may achieve Pass, Merit or Distinction grades in each module. Where work in incomplete or inadequate students are given the grade of Refer until such time as they satisfactorily complete the requirements. ICHM ADVANCED DIPLOMA
Students entering Southville Foreign University’s School of Hospitality Management taking a track in Hospitality Management or Leisure and Tourism are also enrolled in the International College of Hotel Management, Adelaide, Australia, Advanced Diploma in Hospitality Management program, therefore achieving a second or dual qualification.
The Advanced Diploma program requires successful completion of all ICHM subjects which include a series of NTIS units, as well as a 1400 hour internship for graduation. NTIS is the official register of information on Training Packages, Qualifications, Courses, Units of Competency and Registered Training Organizations (RTO’s) in Australia.
Each subject varies in the number of hours of delivery depending on the number of NTIS units and competencies applicable.
All grading of the ICHM subjects is done through a system of faculty grading, Internal Verification and External Verification. This ensures academic standards meet the Australian criteria. Students may achieve a Competency Achieved (CA), Competency with Merit (CM) or Competency with Distinction (CD) grades in each subject.
Where work is incomplete or inadequate students are given the grade of Not Yet Competent (NYC) or Competency Not Achieved (CNA). In the event of a grade of NYC the student is provided with a re-sit opportunity, but may not achieve a grade higher than CA on the second attempt; if they are not successful in achieving a grade of CA on the second attempt then a grade of CNA is recorded. A grade of CNA is not entitled to a re-sit and the student will be required to re-take the subject when it is next offered or file an appeal if applicable.
Southville will issue Statements of Grades upon request, but the official ICHM Transcript and Diploma are issued once all requirements have been fulfilled.
The ICHM Advanced Diploma serves as an entry qualification into the final year of the main campus of ICHM located in Adelaide, Australia.
Internship
Internship is required for all students in the School of Hospitality Management. Hospitality students take their 1,400-hour internship at the end of the second year program and completion of 15 Edexcel units before they enter the degree program. Internship is a regular subject and tuition fee is paid accordingly.
Obtaining Credits from Prior Studies
Southville Foreign University may grant credit in specific subjects in recognition of prior learning. The applicant who wants credit transfer must present a complete list of subjects taken with corresponding course descriptions and grades obtained from the other educational institution(s).
The Academics Council will review the curriculum content to ensure that the said subjects meet the requirement of the respective course of study chosen by the applicant.
Granting of credits will only be done once the applicant has submitted the requirements.
THE BACHELORS DEGREE
Southville Foreign University offers the final year of a UK Bachelors degree BA (Hons) Business Management from University of Sunderland. Students in the School of Hospitality Management who successfully complete their EdExcel Higher National Diploma and graduate, may be admitted into the degree program, subject to proof of English proficiency. The degree program takes one academic year to complete and comprises six (6) subjects spread over the academic year. The University of Sunderland which awards the degree was established in the UK by Royal Charter from Queen Elizabeth II but its origins go back many centuries. Students may choose to attend graduation rites with SFU in the Philippines or at University of Sunderland in the UK. Students who have the Sunderland degree conferred may apply for Masters degree programs in practically all universities around the world as the qualification receives universal recognition.
Students entering the EdExcel Higher National Diploma program may, upon request, receive Conditional Letter of Acceptance into the degree program, conditional upon successful completion of the HND and proof of English competency.
Students from the School of Hospitality Management may also opt to complete their Bachelor’s degree overseas in one of the universities in the UK, USA, Australia or New Zealand, where SFU has formalized agreements. The SFU volunteers were divided into two groups to maximize work efficiency. |
